Montane aims to be PFC Free by 2020
- Sustainability and environmental issues are hot topics for the outdoor industry particularly the use of long chain “C8” PFCs
- We have already moved our DWR away from the “C8” to the improved short chain “C6”
- We continue to work with our suppliers to develop new materials to be PFC-free
- From AW16 we switched our full down range to PFC-free down range using HyperDRY ECO from Allied Feather & Down
- We extensively use PFC-free PRIMALOFT insulation
- We are aiming to be PFC-free by 2020 (technology allowing)
Since our founding in 1993, Montane products have been engineered to offer optimum performance to help our customers go further and faster in the most extreme mountainous environments across the world.
Innovation, ethical sourcing, production and environmentally friendly sourced materials have always been at the forefront of our product design and development and we continuously improve our offerings whilst ensuring the exacting performance standards our users expect.
The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) chemical treatments we use on our products include the use of PFCs (Per-fluorinated compounds) due to their superior water and oil repellency ensuring waterproofness.
As we became aware of the potential negative impacts of PFCs, we moved our DWR treatments away from the longer chain ‘C8’ chemistry to short chain ‘C6’ chemistry allowing us to eliminate the by-products highlighted as being of greatest concern, this is only part of the solution and the journey continues.
We continue to work in partnership with our fabric suppliers to develop PFC-free options; this includes working with world – renowned partners such as W.L. Gore who has invested over $15 million in developing alternative solutions.
In Autumn Winter 2016, we became one of the first brands in the world to fully implement a PFC-free down range using Allied Feather & Down’s new HyperDRY ECO.This uses PFC-free water resistant down as well as carrying the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) ensuring the birds welfare throughout the supply chain.We also extensively use PRIMALOFT® synthetic insulation in our range which is also PFC-free.
Terry Stephenson, Montane’s head of marketing commented;
“Montane has always put ethical and environmental sourcing at the top of our priorities when designing and developing new products.
This can be seen with our ethical RDS and PFC-free down development with Allied Feather & Down which was implemented in Autumn Winter 2016. In recent years it’s become increasingly important to highlight such practices and processes to retailers and consumers as they look to brands, like Montane, to lead the way in what has become a hot topic for environmental groups.
Montane is fully committed to sustainability and we will continue to work with our suppliers and associations such as the European Outdoor Group and the Outdoor Industries Association to ensure we are at the forefront of sustainability and environmental developments.”
Montane is fully committed to removing all PFCs from its DWR treatments and is targeting 2020 to achieve this goal.
