THE PERFORMANCE EDGE

The Performance Edge describes the void beyond your comfort zone, where success or failure can be decided by how well you can operate beyond your limits.

It takes a lot to get there, requiring years honing a craft to perfection in the toughest of conditions.  In situations the less experienced, tough, and strong would not find themselves in, let alone get themselves out of.

And yet it is something we strive for; to find comfort via the competent application of experience, mental toughness, and physical ability.  It is somewhere our world-class stable of athletes have some experience of, whether it be when summiting unclimbed Himalayan peaks, forging new Scottish winter routes, or racing the worlds' most demanding ultra marathons.

Check them out below.

      SIMON YEARSLEY | SCOTTISH WINTER

Simon's climbing career has spanned almost 4 decades, culminating in a fierce love of new routes and true, exploratory climbing.  This takes him as far afield as hitherto unclimbed peaks in the Himalaya, though new-routing in Scotland has always remained close to heart.

Simon talks about what allows him to operate in these hazardous environments, and how a healthy, objective appreciation of the dangers involved can increase the enjoyment of his sport.  He is a man with a comfortable relationship with mitigating risk, seeing consequences of this as unambiguously binary; you are 100% fine or 100% not.

In Simon's Performance Edge, he dissects the closest he has ever got to crossing this line.

MARCUS SCOTNEY | SUCCESS & FAILURE

Marcus is a very accomplished and successful ultramarathon runner.  Since taking up ultra marathons in 2008 he has run for GB 3 times, setting course records at races such as the Montane Spine Challenger along the way.

He has experienced success at numerous international races across the globe and is a well-established name amongst the ultra-endurance fraternity.  However, for the longest time, Marcus has had a complicated relationship with running. Suffering from depression for a number of years, running has been both his salvation and source of great distress, not helped by increasing pressures to perform.  However, it has also given him opportunities to learn more about himself; what drives him, makes him tick, and bring him joy.

In Marcus' Performance Edge, he talks about how his relationship with running has matured, allowing it to become what it always should be; the best medicine.

      DEBBIE MARTIN-CONSANI | ULTRA
      RUNNING AND PUSHING THE LIMITS

Debbie's extensive ultra running CV is motivated by a constant chasing of adventure, born of a desire to pursue - and overcome - personal fears.

Already an accomplished GB 24hr runner, Debbie undertook the greatest challenge of her career in 2017; the 330km Tour des Geants through the Italian Alps. It is here, hallucinating with fatigue and lungs wrecked with altitude and exertion where she met her Performance Edge. Putting ego and aspirations aside to get the job done.

      MALCOLM BASS | UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Malcolm has been climbing exploratory alpine routes all over the world for the past twenty years. Driven by the thrill of breaking new ground, he has climbed in Alaska, China, India and Pakistan. Malcolm began climbing at school; his first routes were on the sandstone crags of the North York Moors.

Malcolm has been exploring both and has succeeded in making some coveted first ascents, as well as having many memorable adventures. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a clinical psychologist, Malcolm believes that psychological and social factors are as important to the outcome of a big climb as is the ability to climb really hard.

In Malcolm's Performance Edge, he talks about returning to Janhukot, determined to finally complete his original objective!
