I have had this pack for a few months and it has become my go to pack for everything from day walks to climbing and 2/3 day expeditions. I've probably used the pack over 40 times in its 3 months so far and it has to be the most comfortable pack I can remember ever remember wearing.
The waist strap supports weight surprisingly well considering the lack of padding and the buckle is brilliant. The materials seem to be hard wearing and show little signs of use despite being chucked about and having rope run across it for my Mountain Leader ropework. Due to the lack of padding in the back you do have to think a little when packing hard objects so they don't poke you in the back but this is not an issue. The roll top is quick and simple to use and doesn't come undone.
The top rope strap is nice and long so it reaches over even when full with a rope on top. I somehow managed to lose mine when glacading down a gully in Wales but the customer service at Montane is superb and they made a new one up specially for me and sent it out with some stickers free of charge!

I only have two minor gripes with this pack, neither of which affect everyday usage.
The first is with the 5l extension; when not in use I find that if you cinch it up it is difficult to roll the top down. The simple solution is to not cinch it up so not an issue. Also when extended fully the load can be a bit unstable as there is no real structure to support the very top but it is rare that I need to extend the pack.
My second gripe is that the wording is stuck on. I was a big fan of it being sowed on as it is on my original medusa (still going strong). I've found some of the letters have come off or worn away where they have been rubbed by rope or against rock. But as I said this doesn't affect usage in any way.

Overall, a brilliant pack that'll do it all and really comfy for me (6'1) slim build

I think the ultra alpine is great. And I wish I could give it five stars. FYI Mine weighs 1 lb 6 oz or 624 grams. Go read Andy Kirkpatrick's writeup about the pack and if you are still interested and you are less than 6 feet tall then you will probably give it 5 stars. It is more sophisticated than it looks, the back panel is shaped to nestle into your lumbar curve and hug your hips. The lower back darting of the fabric is ingenious. I would have gone for all vx42 or x50 rather than the second layer (of silnylon) in the bottom of the pack and regular cordura where the pack is red. The silnylon adds useless weight, it isn't making the pack more durable or more waterproof, the regular cordura is not reliably waterproof. I am guessing sewing complexity of the backpanel and material cost drove the decision to not us DP fabrics throughout. I wish all packs had the aluminum hardware particularly the waist buckle (why plastic on the shoulder strap ladder locks?). You don't appreciate burly buckles until you have had one crack in the field. So I want to love it, but, I am 6’4” and need the back panel to be about 3-4 inches longer. When it is low enough to ride so well on my lumbar the shoulder strap attachment is too low on my shoulder blades. The back panel length is 20 inches even, but for a frameless pack it needs to ride lower to hit your lumbar and hips as well as I describe. I'm going to try it like it is for a while longer but am leaning towards ripping the seams of the backpack straps, darting the existing seem a little and bartacking the straps 4 inches higher. The roll top has enough room to handle it I think and if I am wrong I can just use the cinch top. If Montane makes a tall size I will buy it. If Montane makes a tall size with vx42 everywhere I'll buy it again.
