The Yukon arctic is a hostile place. Its tundra stretches for hundreds of barely populated miles over frozen lakes, mountains, and alpine forests. When snow isn't falling heavily from the skies it is piling heavily in deep drifts, slowing progress. Temperatures can drop as low as -50°c.
Competitors must be able to operate in such conditions whilst towing a heavy pulk behind them. It is exhausting work, sweat freezes in the numbing cold, with hypothermia or frostbite very real considerations if layer management is not expertly managed.
