I have used the lighter Minimus jacket for a couple of years, it's fine but found I needed a hardier jacket for long distance hiking with a packpack in a cold, wet climate. This jacket fits the bill with a great, sturdy hood (works well with a cap), 2 large external pockets for map or gloves and an internal pocket obviously made to perfectly fit a large smartphone (eg although tight it fits an iphone6 plus without it jumping around). I also like the softer feel of the internal GORE C-Knit. I find that opening the wrist wraps wide and drawing main zip down provides adequate ventilation while hiking.

I bought this jacket to replace my Montane Direct Ascent, which is starting to de-laminate. First impressions, it looks very similar, although a trimmer fit. The major difference though is obviously the material used, with the Gore Tex making the Surge a lighter jacket, although, and despite the C-Knit, it still suffers from being crinkly and not as nice against the skin as the Event.

I've just got back from trekking along Hadrian's Wall and I can say that the weather was filthy, and unfortunately the Surge jacket didn't stand up to the task! The problem was, the jacket wetted out after about 20 mins and this badly affected the breathability of the jacket; resulting in me being as wet from sweat on the inside as the outside.

The other big issue was the pockets, they were too low, with my (Montane) pack's hip straps getting in the way. But, the biggest disappointment was the fact I couldn't fit an os map in them, which meant having to carry my map in the howling rain!

Overall, I feel this jacket is a definite downgrade on the Direct Ascent I'd replaced, and though it maybe better in less severe weather, I therefore feel I can't recommend it (and I've always been a fan of Montane too).
