"It is never over until the finish line – keep pushing."
Jayson has always enjoyed spending time outdoors. From the age of 14 this was spent mountain biking above anything else. He joined the British Army at 17, which, through extensive military training (running in boots whilst carrying equipment) and serving with a professional, dedicated unit, exposed him further to the outdoors. In 1999 he achieved one of his life’s ambitions - passing the ‘All Arms Commando Course’, earning the coveted Green Beret in the process. After eight years of service he left to pursue other life ambitions, progressing to downhill mountain bike racing. Travelling around the UK, he won several national races in his age category. In 2011 he joined his local running club (Pickering RC). Initially this was to help with his biking fitness although he soon discovered a natural aptitude and passion for the discipline. A turning point for Jayson came in July 2012 when he spent 36 hours on a running adventure with friends. As well as the social aspect of running, he relished the feeling of achievement: “The feeling of happiness and freedom I felt from spending so much time running over that period felt quite magical at the time”. Since then, running has been his sole focus and he hasn’t looked back.
"I'm really excited to be working with Montane, I love being out on the hills, whatever the weather. Montane gear will certainly keep me dry, warm and more importantly running fast!"
Jayson currently trains around the Yorkshire moors and ventures over to the Lake District, Snowdon or Yorkshire Dales for extra mountain training. He currently averages around 12-15 hours a week. “For me I enjoy the training so much, the racing is the end result of the hard work and gives an enormous sense of achievement. I feel extremely fortunate to have the abilities I do and want to make the most of them.”
Jayson has firmly embedded himself in the ultra running community and is excited that trail, off-road and ultra running is in growth, that new clothing and equipment is being developed and new events and challenges are being set-up; all of which is solidifying the foundations of the existing ultra running culture and community.
Jayson’s next step is moving full-time into running, training and coaching from 2016. In addition to running, he also enjoys cycling, walking, swimming and strength conditioning. He helps organise local running races and training camps / days. “Connecting and working with people who want to better themselves is something I strive for.” “I view it as a huge honour to work alongside Montane as such an innovative and well respected company. I am really excited about taking my goals for running and adventure forwards with the support of such great clothing and equipment. The minimalist, lightweight and functional design philosophy aimed towards use in extreme environments mirrors my kit requirements.”
