35 years of experience & technical knowledge: the journey so far
The concept of the fabric that later became Pertex® was an idea of Hamish Hamilton, who some 35 years ago discovered that moisture would move along the microscopic capillaries within a woven fabric, spreading over a larger surface where it quickly dried.
Hamish brought his idea to Perseverance Mills Ltd, a Lancashire textile manufacturer specializing in very lightweight, tightly woven synthetic fabrics used in dot matrix printers for the rapidly growing data processing industry.
The Pertex brand was born.
It was in the mid 1980s that Pertex began to be used for the shell of down clothing and sleeping bags, replacing the much heavier fabrics which were used at the time. It was soon discovered that the Pertex was not only lighter, but it dried more quickly, was softer, allowing the down to loft to its maximum and was comfortable against the skin. It was these attributes that led Pertex to become the recognised leader in high performance fabric technology.
Pertex’s heritage of staying to its British roots for over 35 years has led them on a path of continuous innovation to deliver the best end-use focused fabrics in the business. This dedication to innovation and excellence make Pertex and Montane an ideal match.
As a long-standing ingredient in the outdoor industry Pertex takes its responsibility to minimise its impact on the environment throughout the manufacturing and supply chain seriously. Through several initiatives Pertex aims to continually further environmental sustainability without compromising the performance and durability of its fabrics.
Pertex is an approved partner of the Bluesign® system, which is an initiative for sustainable textile production. Bluesign® seeks to eliminate harmful substances from the beginning of the manufacturing process and sets and controls standards for an environmentally friendly and safe production. This not only ensures that the final textile product meets very stringent consumer safety requirements worldwide but also provides confidence to the consumer in the acquisition of a sustainable product.
Elimination of PFOA
Part of the responsibility to both the environment, Pertex has successfully eliminated Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from all raw materials and manufacturing processes. Pertex is one of the first companies in the industry to complete this move away from the use of PFOA.
