BEAUTIFUL IN ITS BRUTALITY: TEAM MONTANE GEARS UP FOR THE MONTANE TOR DES GÉANTS

With just over 2 weeks until the start of the 2017 Montane Tor des Géants (TDG) 205 mile / 330km mountain endurance race, we re-discover the challenges of this brutal ultra distance event and the #TeamMontane athletes taking part. This year also sees the inaugural Tot Dret ultra race – a shorter, 80 mile / 130km, but no less gruelling variation of the TDG. Classed as one of the 5 “hardest runs” in the world, those that stand on the TDG start line will be facing the challenge head on.... Read More

PERFECT 100% RATING FROM TRAIL MAGAZINE

Softshell jackets are one of the most versatile items of outdoor kit you can have in your wardrobe. Water and wind resistant, they can be used as layers in more extreme conditions, or worn as an outer layer in their own right in warmer climes. Britain’s foremost outdoor magazine, Trail, through well respected gear guru, Graham Thompson, has seen fit to award our Dyno Stretch Jacket Trail’s Approved status. And not only that… Trail’s September issue goes even further and rates the Dyno Stretch Jacket with a perfect 100% overall score. Receiving 5/5 stars... Read More

GUIDING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: JON GUPTA’S EVEREST PERSPECTIVE

Back in May this year, Montane mountaineer Jon Gupta guided Mollie Hughes into the record books. 26-year-old Mollie became the youngest woman in the world to successfully scale Mt Everest from both the north and south sides, having already summited from the south side in 2012. Not only did this propel Mollie into the public spotlight, but it also meant that Jon became the youngest British male to successfully summit Everest from both sides, having previously ascended the mountain in 2013 from the south. In between planning a plethora of projects for... Read More

With 10 years since the first Montane Lakeland 100 & 50 races were run, this year’s races were set to be spectacular. After a record number of entries in a matter of minutes back in September last year, turn-out was equally high on... Read More

SALLY FAWCETT’S BOB GRAHAM ROUND

Team Montane athlete Sally Fawcett has recently fulfilled one of her long-term running goals – completing the classic Lake District Bob Graham round. In a nutshell, this is 66 miles, 42 Lakeland peaks, 27,000 ft of ascent. Man pitting himself against mountains is by no means a new idea. The Bob Graham round is named after the man himself, who set the record for the most fells scaled (42) in a 24 hour period in June 1932. However, the first recorded long distance ’round’ took place in 1864, heralding a long and rich... Read More

THE ICONIC MONTANE LAKELAND 100 & 50 TURNS 10

The legendary Montane Lakeland 100 & 50 ultra distance races celebrate their 10th birthday this year. It might be hard to believe, but the inaugural Montane Lakeland 100 & 50 ultra distance trail races (ML100 & 50) first took place 10 years ago. The very first line up consisted of 72 intrepid racers ready to set out. In a testament to the strength of the event, its notoriety and the all-encompassing sense of achievement, 10 years later, race organisers (Epic Events) see places sell out in a matter of minutes... The story of the ML100/50 race anthem

Completing the gruelling 105 miles of the Montane Lakeland 100 within the 40 hours time limit requires runners to travel through at least one full night, often 2. Hallucinations are common amongst competitors and in 2012 one runner was convinced that he had passed opera singer Paul Potts (Britain’s Got Talent TV Show winner), who was humming the famous Nessun Dorma, from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot, the time. The relevance of this story is that Nessun Dorma translates as ‘none shall sleep’ which seemed appropriate given the circumstances of the runners.... Read More

Jon Gupta’s recipe for Everest success

Earlier this week (Tuesday 16 May), Team Montane mountaineer Jon Gupta guided 26 year-old British climber Mollie Hughes to the summit of Mount Everest from the north side. Whilst many people every year summit the tallest mountain in the world, what was special about this particular expedition was that both athletes had previously summited Everest from the south side already, making Mollie the first British woman and Jon the youngest British man to successfully scale the peak from both north and side sides. Jon has been a core member of... Read More
