Nick Morris Atomic Review

Warm and dry in a Scottish winter and excellent breathability on a Spring day in a featherweight jacket: that’s the Atomic. The jacket has all the frills without the weight. A fully adjustable hood, pit zips, waist cords and pockets that work with a harness or waist strap. But how does it perform, the question everyone wants to know.

I have taken the jacket out over the last few months through many different conditions including a Scottish winter and a Lake District Spring, so this review covers both extremes. The Atomic jacket breathes extremely well removing damp air to keep you warm and dry with the pit zips offering extra ventilation if needed.

The fully adjustable hood has a rear cinchable drawcord, 2 front adjusting cords and a wired peak. When these are drawn tight the hood offers great visibility and moves with the head. Also, it can withstand very strong winds and stay in place while keeping out that good old British weather. But can be rolled away when not needed. Another nice feature is the internal exit cords meaning they don’t whip you in the face on a windy day.

The Atomic jacket sheds water well thanks to the PERTEX®Shield fabric with dry touch coating. However, it can be easily refreshed with a Nik Wax wash treatment so it will keep on ensuring you stay dry on a wet British day for many years. It also has taped micro seams to ensure the rain doesn’t get in. The 2 exterior pockets work well and are above the waist strap, so they can be used on the move, and feature a water drain. The YKK zippers feature rubber toggles for use with gloves and the wrists have Velcro straps to keep out the rain with the main zip featuring an internal storm flap.

With all these features you would expect a heavier weight jacket, however, its simply not the case.  The Atomic weighs 303g (approx) but when you wear the jacket you won’t even notice it’s on; the sign of a comfortable well-designed piece of kit doing its job unnoticed in the background.

The fit of the jacket is excellent. I am a tall, athletic build and the small sizing fitted perfectly. Enough room for insulation layers underneath ensures you can wear the jacket through many seasons and regulate your temperature well. And the technical tailoring and articulated elbow fit mean the hem stays low when your arms are raised.
