Along with poorly fitting boots, a badly chosen rucksack has the potential to make your trip into the hills a misery. Needing to invest in a multiday pack, I spent an age reading reviews and looking at the specs of countless manufacturers' offerings before narrowing it down to three, but you only really know a rucksack is right for you once you've tried it on with some weight in it. As soon as I put the Grand Tour 55 on in my local shop (with 15kg test weight) I was immediately impressed with the fit of the back system and especially liked the hip belt which offers really good padding and load-bearing support. Of the three rucksacks I tried, Montane's seemed to offer the most 'natural' fit and felt secure when I 'threw some shapes' mimicking nearly falling over in all directions (i'm not gifted with the balance of an ibex). I took the Grand Tour to the Black Mountains in Wales last week for a two nighter and it coped easily with about 18kg. Considering this pack only weighs 1300g and it felt like it could handle more, that's pretty impressive. The DWR finish kept the contents of the pack dry when I chose to have a 'lie down' (technical term) in a peat bog, and the stash pockets on the front came in handy when I had to pack a sopping wet flysheet on both mornings. I found the cord lock closures really easy to use, even with heavy gloves on and the well-designed hip-belt pockets are of a decent size and sited well. Actually, everything seems to be well-designed - one of the things I most like is the lack of stuff you don't need, like a zippered bottom section for example. On the negative side (and these are really just personal things), the pocket for the hydration system only runs half way down the back so I couldn't fit my 3L bladder in, the Buddy Pocket is a great idea most of the time but when you take your pack off and put it on the ground the zip is facing away from you and finally, (although I suspect I will get used to this) the chest harness is a little difficult to site without looking down at it. My main criteria of low weight, high durability and sensible price seem to have been easily met and even considering the few very minor niggles I would not hesitate to recommend this product to anyone looking for a 50L+ sack.
